What I Should Have Done vs. What I Did

Today, my internet friends, is the last day of voting in the Just For Nice People, Kick Ass, Free Wedding Photography Giveaway.  Next week I’ll announce the finalists.  Yay!

You may not have noticed this, but I’ve been kind of quiet for the past week.  If you’re new around here, you probably were just grateful I didn’t demand that you ‘Like’ my facebook page.

But, if you’re cynical like most regular Americans with a pulse, you might have wondered why, with all the contest buzz going on and all the extra visitors it had to be bringing to the blog and website, why wasn’t there a Blizzard Blitzkreig Bombardment of Blog-posting Bluster about how awesome sauce I am.

And the truth is, I really should have been shamelessly marketing to you…  swamping you with all kinds of forgettable junk food posts about all the neat-o photographically wonder-mous offerings I have for the young couple embarking on their marital journey.. yadda yadda….

It’s just that I just don’t have that in me.  I completely hate it when businesses do it to me.  And all the stuff that’s considered good marketing, the stuff that all the professional photography blogs say I should be doing to you, well, half of it makes my skin crawl and the rest I just plain think is annoying.

According to all the marketing gurus, I should have made a blog post every day for the past three weeks during this contest.  Instead, I made a couple of my regular posts and left you in peace.  Because, jeez, who wants to hang out with someone who has that much to say about themselves anyway?

Truth is, for the past few days, I’ve been sick (stupid cooties).  I should have stayed in bed and slept.  Instead I downloaded a couple of really great books to my Kindle about alternative photography that I’m photo-nerd-a-riffically excited about.

After that, I spent a bunch of time on all of my favorite photography sites researching and learning about alternative film photography (yay for the new laptop!).  And then I bought a whole shit-ton of cool stuff.  Most of it will be here today.  Chemicals.  Lots of chemicals.  Film for my 4×5 camera.  Film for my medium format camera.  Oh, and some digital stuff too.

My darkroom is (has been) ready to roll.  Today I’m going to develop a roll of film.

In the next few weeks, I will be experimenting with caffenol printing and albumen prints and palladium prints.  I probably won’t blow anything up, but I can’t really make any promises.  I’ve been studying up on wet plate collodion.  Now that’s a serious opportunity to blow some stuff up.  Ether is used to create the base for the negative, and its fumes are apparently more explosive than Rush Limbaugh at a N.O.W. convention.

Anyway, if ‘m supposed to be converting a lot of people into readers of my blog, I guess I blew it.  On the other hand, if you’ve hired me to photograph your wedding or your family portrait this year, I’ve really worked my butt off for you and me the past few weeks.

And if you were thinking about hiring me to shoot your wedding or family portrait or anything, hang around and check out what’s coming next.  It’s gonna be different and gorgeous.  Really.  Gorgeous.

Why did I tell you all this?  Isn’t this just a marketing gimmick too?  Maybe.  The mere existence of this blog is a marketing gimmick.  But mostly, I just wanted you to know that I made a conscious decision to not annoy the hell out of you.

Because I’m 100% substance, baby! (You have to read that in your best Jersey Shore voice.)

Ok, giveaway business time.  The voting ends tonight at 12am-ish.  The 3 couples with the highest number of votes are the finalists.  If you haven’t voted for your favorite couple yet, you only have a little more time to do your best to help them out.  Anything is possible at this point, and anyone can still get enough votes to be a finalist (hooray for social media!).  It’s been really interesting to watch so far, and I’m excited about meeting the finalists.

Thanks to everyone who’s been a part of the Just For Nice People, Kick Ass, Free Wedding Photography Giveaway.  I’ve learned a lot from all of you.

Nice people kick ass.
