ABOUT YOUR ARTIST

The Power of Photography

No, this photo isn't me. Chances are, you guessed that already—but let me tell you a story. This is a picture of my grandmother that I took for my first film photography class in college, and it’s still one of the best photos I’ve ever made. Not because it’s technically perfect, but because it perfectly captures the way my grandmother always looked at me. She passed away on February 27, 2010, and I miss her every day. But when I look at this photo, I travel back in time to relive a sweet moment with her that I might otherwise have forgotten. When I look at this photo, I can hear her voice as clearly as if she was in the room with me.

That’s what I get to do every day as a professional photographer—make photos that you will look at later and remember THAT moment as clearly as if it was yesterday. Photos that tell your story and celebrate your relationships in whatever awesome, non-traditional, beautiful and/or badass way you want.

At your wedding, I’ll also take all of the traditional shots you expect. But my favorites are those spontaneous, unexpected shots that aren’t off any list—the ones that, even years later, will transport you back to that amazing moment again and again. That’s the true power of photography, and it’s what got me hooked in the first place.

"We all have our time machines, don't we? Those that take us back are memories... And those that carry us forward, are dreams."

Conventional marketing wisdom generally instructs business owners to write an 'about me' page that's really about the client and what you're going to do to solve their problem. I'm also supposed to create a problem to solve here as well.

But I've been photographing weddings for more than a decade now, and I have a different understanding of what my job is than I did back in 2009 when I made my first wedding photos.

Over the years, I've come to understand that the best thing I can do for you (or anyone in my life) is be the very best version of myself that I can. In order to tell your story in a compelling and beautiful way, I need to have a strongly developed point of view.

When I hold a camera, I photograph you with all the empathy and perspective that I would want someone to have as they tell my story.

When I hold a camera, I photograph each person with the confidence that comes from years of practical experience, seeing each image through the lens of time, making photos for the person you are now, and the person you will be in a decade, and another decade after that.

Make no mistake, photography is time travel

When you choose me to make your photos, you get an artist who is accomplished, confident, and always thoughtfully evolving and growing. But most importantly, you get someone who sees the beauty in everything, especially you.

philosophy

I believe life is beautiful.

I believe there's more beauty in the world than we can fathom.

I believe that we miss a lot of it because we're too distracted by the routines of daily life.

I believe the details of daily life are beautiful.

I believe your life is beautiful.

my approach

I specialize in capturing authentic moments as they happen. Through most of the day, I am an observer, immersing myself in everything as it unfolds. I won't orchestrate moments, but I will be ready and there before they happen. During portrait time, I'll be your gentle guide, giving you enough direction to allow you to enjoy the experience but still be your genuine self for my camera.

why film

There's something magical about film. It's tangible. And in a world that exists more and more in the ether, that's a beautiful thing. I love the process of film. From loading a roll or sheet into one of my vintage cameras, to pulling the dripping wet negative out of the tank after developing it in my darkroom, film is always exciting and full of wonder. There's a sense of connection to the past, of timelessness, and yet it always looks perfectly modern. It transcends trends. It just lasts.
