Today I want to tell you about Alexis and Daniel and their summer camp wedding with the most epic dance party ever at Timber Lake West in Roscoe, New York. Alexis and Daniel met a few years ago in journalism graduate school at Columbia. Their story is a little bit star-crossed. “We were doing a year long program in different concentrations, so we got to know each other a tiny bit—mostly by reputation. Then, we both won the same fellowship to spend a month reporting from the Norwegian arctic–but at different times. (Dan was the alternate to the fellowship and they worried it would be awkward having the two of us share an apartment.) We met up over labor day weekend after we’d graduated and Alexis had returned from the trip and that dinner lead to drinks lead to a Sunday Damian Marley concert lead to a three year long distance relationship between New York and DC (where Dan was living at the time.)”
They chose a summer camp for their wedding so that their “friends and family could spend as much time together (and time together outside) as possible—the summer camp allowed us to make that happen. Creating community is really important to us, and one of the reasons we wanted to have a wedding is to celebrate the people in our lives who form our community. That’s also why we tried our best to work with small family businesses for most aspects of our wedding (and bought most of our things, including the engagement ring, on one stretch of Atlantic Avenue in Brooklyn).”
And their plan worked too. Letting everyone spend that extra day getting to know one another at summer camp meant that no one held back when it was time to hit the dance floor. With one of the best wedding bands I’ve ever heard, the music was flawless and the dance party was on fire. Congratulations Alexis and Daniel!
