Today I want to tell you the story of how Betsy married Ali in an absolutely perfect wedding ceremony on the shores of Wheeler Lake on a glorious summer afternoon at Joe Wheeler State Park in northwest Alabama.
But first, let me tell you about all the amazing personal touches that they included in their day that made it one of the most thoughtful wedding days I’ve ever been a part of. There were so many, I hope I don’t forget anything. I’m going to start with a shout out to whoever made those delicious homemade Oreos. You are my hero. Those were incredible. I snagged a couple after Ali and Betsy told me I’d regret it for the rest of my life if I didn’t. They were right. I put two in a takeaway box that was very thoughtfully provided for guests, thinking I’d have one and save one for my wife. Please nobody tell my wife, but I ate both of them on the drive home. I have no regrets and I would do it again.
So, anyway, I got sidetracked. Personal touches. Ali and Betsy’s wedding.
There were so many personal and custom elements to their wedding day, starting with the location. Joe Wheeler State Park is a spot full of memories for Betsy’s family. They’ve been vacationing at the park for multiple generations. And it was on a visit to the park when Ali and Betsy first said ‘I love you.’
If you look closely at the detail photos of the tables, you’ll see that their chargers were crocheted. Their dessert table was a collaborative affair. Guests and family members were asked to bring their best home made desserts.
Because they were having a summer wedding outdoors in the south, they generously encouraged their guests to dress comfortably and casually, which is why everyone you see is smiling and relaxed. Their best friends officiated, and it was the sweetest ceremony. They also wanted to have the best dance party ever, so they hired Emerald Empire Band, and that was the correct decision. An epic dance party was had.
When I asked them what the most important photos for me to make of their day would be, they told me they wanted lots of candids of their families and guests enjoying the day. So I put on my photojournalist hat and got to work. What you see here is the result.
Ali and Betsy, I just want you to know that I had the most fun getting to know you and your families and friends. You are surrounded by so much love. Congratulations to you both.
