Today I want to tell you about Nicholas and Workman’s unique and elegant wedding celebration. Well, I’m actually going to let them tell you in their own words as they described everything to me.
How did you meet?
Nicholas: We met on Tinder, of all places. I was living in San Francisco at the time, but I was going to relocate to Atlanta in a few months. I had traveled out to Florida to spend Christmas with family and decided to drive up to Atlanta to look at housing.
We didn’t actually match until a couple weeks later, when I returned to the Bay, but we decided to start conversing anyhow. We exchanged phone numbers and had our first phone call, which lasted 5 hours, followed by our first Facetime, which lasted approximately 4 hours.
My best friend and I drove cross-country, and Workman and I communicated, texted, and checked in on a daily basis. We officially went on our first date four days after I arrived in Atlanta, and became inseparable. It was a connection that neither of us had experienced before. It was pure love.
How did you get engaged?
Nicholas: Something you should know about me, I’m a VERY detail oriented person. I pick up on everything, it’s very difficult to surprise me. So our two year anniversary was coming up, every year we go back to the restaurant where we had our first date, it’s called the Optimist and it’s very special. I had a big work trip planned for the day after, so my mind was pretty focused on that. Workman and I are both big guys, I’m 6’5″ and Workman is 6’2″ and we can put away some food.
Anyway, we’re at dinner and I ordered a branzino and Workman ordered a couple appetizers as his entree. Distracted me didn’t pick up on that, focused me would have known something was up for my boyfriend to only order a couple appetizers and not finish them. I ate my whole fish and half of his meal haha. We started to look at desserts and one of my absolute favorites is a creme brulee . The Optimist has a delicious creme brulee, but instead he suggested we get ice cream.
He said we can swing by Publix, pick up some Jenny’s and head back to his condo and I thought that sounded great. Our anniversary btw is February 15th, so walking into a Publix the day after Valentines Day looks like a hurricane blew through. Also he suggested going to a different Publix than our usual go-to, again a detail “focused me” would have picked up on.
Prior to our anniversary we had both said “no big gifts” as we had a lot going on already and so we’re in the elevator and he’s a little quiet, we walk into his condo and sitting on his dining table is the BIGGEST BOX I’ve seen, it literally took up the entire table. That was the first surprise of the night.
On top of the box was a card with my nickname on it “Nugget”. As I opened it my back was to Workman, I open the card and it simply says “Will you marry me?”, I turn around with “Holy S#*t!” eyes and there he is, on one knee, takes my hand and asks me to marry him.
At this point, I’m so filled with a whole different type of adrenaline, I immediately needed to take off my jacket and step outside onto his balcony to breathe. I understood then, when you see people scream or shake their arms, it’s a full body explosion of emotions. I said yes!
Oh! and then I opened the box and it was my engagement present. We’re not big jewelry people, but we do love to travel, so he got me this stunning Gucci travel bag. We kissed, we laughed, we got cheek cramps and then called our best friends. It was an unbelievable moment, one of which I was very happy to have been distracted.
Is there anything special or unique you’d like to tell us about your wedding?
Nicholas: We decided to split up our wedding and reception. We wanted to enjoy married life for a bit, plus we bought a new house. We’ve had several friends get married and most of them told us “be ready for the reception to be a blur” and we simply didn’t want to have that chaos on our first night as husbands.
So for our wedding we had a very intimate ceremony surrounded by our closest friends in a friend’s backyard and got catering from our favorite taco shop. Simple, sweet, was the perfect merge of our two worlds. Our reception was six months later, with 100 guests of friends and family to celebrate our love.
If you’ve looked through my blog, you’ve probably noticed a theme of me telling you how amazing the folks I photograph are. It’s because they are. And Nicholas and Workman are no exception. From the moment I met them to make their engagement photos in Inman Park last year, I was welcomed into their home like an old friend and enveloped into the warmth and joy of their world. These two are made of magic and love, and they’re surrounded by the most loving group of people you could imagine. It’s been a great honor to tell their story.
Also, as you look through these photos, you’re going to see that I took the liberty of humoring myself for once and this set is mostly black and white. From the perfect lines of their handsome black suits, to the slightly minimalist decor, and the expressiveness of everyone present, the black and white photos just sang to me. I couldn’t resist this time. It just works.
