The Five Laws of Stratospheric Success: A Book Review of Sorts

Being a Go-Giver Actually Works.  (And A Few Photos From 2011 You Never Saw)

About a year ago, I read a short little book called The Go-Giver by Bob Burg and John David Mann.  It’s a different kind of business book, kind of a business parable.  The story is a little on the cheesy side, but the story is just the vehicle they use to tell you their Five Laws of Stratospheric Success.  And the Five Laws are something worth knowing.  In fact, when I finished this book, I made Jessie read it.

Now, if you know me, you know I read a lot of business books.  In fact, I only read non-fiction because I don’t have the patience to read fiction anymore.  I’ll just wait for the movie, thank-you-very-much.  But Jessie.  Well, she only reads fiction.  Lots of it too.  If it’s got a plot and maybe a wizard, she’s all about it.  But non-fiction books just piss her off.  Funny that.

And every now and then I’ll read an especially interesting book about how the brain works or something, and I’ll say, “Hon, you gotta read this one, it’s so INTERESTING.”  And she’ll pick it up and thumb through the pages, sniff it maybe, and then just give me The Look.  You know The Look.  The one that says, “So not happening.”

But The Go-Giver is different.  First, it’s pretty short.  And then, it’s kind of a story.  So she read it.  No kidding.  The Whole Book.  And then, something really incredible happened.  She turned into a frog.

No no.  Just kidding.  But it was at least that surprising.  Jessie said she liked this business book. In fact, not only did she like the book, but she said that she thought we should run my business by these rules.

And she printed the rules out and we hung them on the board above the desk.  So now, you’re all wondering what in the world can ANYONE write to make a rabid Harry Potter fan read a business book and LIKE it?  Well, I’m gonna share.  And I also suggest you pick up a copy of this little gem and read it too, because it really is pretty neat.

The Five Laws of Stratospheric Success

1. The Law of Value:  Your true worth is determined by how much more you give in value than you take in payment.

2. The Law of Compensation:  Your income is determined by how many people you serve and how well you serve them.

3.  The Law of Influence:  Your influence is determined by how abundantly you place other people’s interests first.

4. The Law of Authenticity:  The most valuable gift you have to offer is yourself.

5. The Law of Receptivity:  The key to effective giving is to stay open to receiving.

And that’s it.  It’s just that simple.  Like the things that work usually are.  The neat thing is, all this is stuff you can do in your everyday life too.  It’s not just about business.

Anyway, I thought I’d share that with you guys.  And I’d never had a chance to share some of these photos with you, since not every shoot can be a whole blog post.  Plus, sometimes I find a gem after the blog post is up, so I hope you enjoyed seeing them.

Now for me, it’s back to work.  Today is spreadsheet day.  Bleh.  But this weekend is an awesome APW couple’s engagement session!  So excited about that!!
