Erin and James: Engagement Pictures in Charleston
Today I want to introduce you to Erin and James. They are engaged and are planning an incredibly awesome wedding next summer in Charleston. But, more importantly, they are the coolest teachers in the world. Seriously. We had a great morning wandering the streets of downtown Charleston making engagement pictures and discussing history (well, James and I had a good time talking about history, and Erin is darn patient). But now I’m going to turn the story over to them and let you get to know them.
How did you meet?
James: “We actually met in college, though neither of us can remember the exact moment. We had a lot of mutual friends and would see each other occasionally. All we know for sure is that a certain picture exists that features me wearing a teal blazer at Erin’s 80s party in 2006. So, we go way back.
When Erin moved back to Charleston in January 2010 to pursue a Master of Arts in Teaching, we began to see each other more and more through mutual friends. As I was also pursuing a Masters in Teaching, we eventually formed our own friendship. In August of that year, Erin popped the question: “Will you help me move?” I not only showed up to help, I even conned a few friends of mine into helping. One of my friends complained and said, “You’d better get somewhere with this girl.” A few days later, we began dating.
We have been inseparable ever since.”
What was dating like?
Erin: “Dating was tricky at the beginning of our relationship with our crazy schedules – James was student teaching and I was finishing my Master’s Degree. Somehow, though, we always managed to find time to see each other. James would often show up with flowers for no reason, and some of our best dates consisted of sipping lemonade on my porch in downtown Charleston for hours or James giving me art lessons as I flung paint at blank canvasses. It helps that we love staying in just as much as big nights on the town.”
Describe your proposal.
Erin: “In December 2011 James suggested a date night before my family came to town that weekend for her graduation and to meet his family. He said they were going to the restaurant where they had their first date and that he would pick her up. I was suspicious and thought this could be the proposal.
However, when James came to pick me up, he was cool as a cucumber (I would later find out that the restaurant owner had made him drink a tall glass of wine to calm his nerves). By the time we reached the restaurant, I had talked myself out of the idea that he was proposing. So I was surprised when we walked in to find a whole section reserved for us, and a Scrabble board on the table with the phrase, “I love you. Will you marry me?” spelled out on it. (Over Thanksgiving, I casually mentioned during a game of Scrabble that he could propose with a Scrabble board for all I cared. So thats precisely what he did). According to James, I asked multiple times, “Really? Really? Are you serious?” and then made him ask the question out loud. So he did. And I said yes.”
How would you describe your relationship?
James: “Comfortable. Erin is a planner and likes to think things through (it’s what she does best). I’m more laid-back, taking things as they come, but we are able to switch roles if that’s what the other person needs. We are best friends and are always able to make each other laugh, which is probably the best part of it all.”
Whats your wedding going to be like?
Two words: “Doughnut Tower. It’s going to be a really fun, southern party.”
OMG, a Doughnut Tower? This job just gets better all the time.
Thanks for hanging out with me, Erin and James. It was great to meet you and your family. You guys are so much fun to hang out with, and I can’t wait for your wedding!
