“A blade of grass is the journeywork of the stars”
― Walt Whitman, Leaves of Grass
Today I’d like to tell you a little bit about Pierce and Scott, who asked me to make their wedding portraits in Atlanta’s Piedmont Park on a perfect fall afternoon.
Piedmont Park is one of the most iconic spots in Atlanta, but on this particular fall afternoon, it was more than just a backdrop. The vibrant fall leaves painted the park in shades of crimson and gold, complimenting their elegant white and black tuxedos and their radiant joy as we explored the park.
One of the most special moments came as they stood beneath the tree canopy near the lake. As the sun began to slip lower in the sky, the golden light wrapped around them, creating a soft glow that seemed to emanate from them. This is one of the reasons I have always loved making wedding photos, or any kind of photos, in Piedmont Park. The park is a perfect blend of city meeting nature, and every set of photos I create there is unique to each couple. No two sets of photos ever look the same because the park is always changing and it reveals something new every time I visit.
Pierce and Scott weren’t looking for traditional posed photos, although we made a few of those because they’re important too. Instead, we spent the afternoon focused on capturing their laughter as they walked along the park’s paths holding hands, quiet moments together sitting on the stone steps, and their excitement as they walked along the wall while the sun set on the midtown skyline in the background. Piedmont Park is a place that has a perfect combination of wide open spaces for big moments and epic portraits, with lots of hidden nooks for more private, tender moments away from onlookers.
As a queer wedding photographer serving Atlanta, I understand on a very personal level how important it is to create a space where folks are celebrated for who they are. This wasn’t just a photo session, it was a documentation of the perfection of their love.
If you’re dreaming of making wedding photos in Piedmont Park, or anywhere, that tell your story authentically, I’d love to capture those moments for you.
